FTT rules in FOI appeal over corporate sponsorship

The General Regulatory Chamber of the First-tier Tribunal (FTT) made a substitute decision in the case Garrard v Information Commissioner and the British Museum. Dr. Christopher Garrard was partially successful in his appeal regarding his request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) for information about sponsorship negotiations with BP. While there was a strong public interest in transparency, the FTT ultimately concluded that maintaining the commercial interests exemption outweighed this interest, citing the Museum's need to secure favourable deals with sponsors and maximise its funds from commercial sponsorship. The FTT ordered the disclosure of information not protected by the exemption.
