Former Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham will join Baker McKenzie in an undefined role beginning January 2022. Ms Denham completed her term as head of the Information Commissioner's Office on the 30th of November, with former New Zealand Privacy Commissioner John Edwards set to head up the ICO starting January 2022. Baker McKenzie's Chair of Global Data Privacy and Security Business Unit Brian Hengesbaugh, CIPP/US, called Denham's hire "a real coup" as she's dealt with "the thorniest issues in the field of technology and how our data is used and accessed."
UPDATE: 051221 - Politico reports on the reaction by transparency and privacy campaigners about the news former Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham is to move from gatekeeper to poacher following the announcement of her appointment with Baker McKenzie. Ministers and civil servants need approval to join the private sector and are usually subject to a two-year lobbying ban. However, the ICO confirmed because its employees are neither civil servants nor ministers, Ms Denham did not need approval from the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments.
