BCS responds to DCMS Artificial Intelligence consultation

The BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT has responded to the call for evidence from the Parliamentary Science and Technology Select Committee on the governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI). In September 2021, the government's National AI Strategy outlined its strategy to regulate AI use under certain circumstances. Then in July this year, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) unveiled a set of proposals to regulate AI use in its consultation: Establishing a pro-innovation approach to regulating AI. In its response, the BCS sought input from its professional membership, which outlines management and technical difficulties in building successful AI systems. In addition, the BCS notes, "there is not a uniformly high level of ethical practice across information technology in general." In order for AI technology to be more transparent and accountable, the BCS makes several recommendations.
