BEUC submits proposal to improve GDPR cross-border enforcement

22/11/2024 | BEUC

The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) has published a paper on the harmonisation law to make cross-border enforcement of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) work better for consumers.

The BEUC paper points out that consumers and organisations representing them face significant obstacles when submitting complaints to data protection authorities (DPAs), especially in cross-border cases.

Such challenges lead to lengthy delays in resolving potential GDPR violations and compromise the overall effectiveness of the regulation.

In its conclusions, the BEUC outlines several key recommendations for the new procedural rules concerning the enforcement of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). These include establishing clear and specific timelines for both lead and concerned authorities involved in cross-border cases, ensuring that complainants are afforded the right to present their perspectives at critical stages of the process, and simplifying the complaint lodging procedure for individuals and civil society groups.
