Energie Fitness removes facial recognition entry system

A blog article by digital rights group Big Brother Watch (BBW) outlines a recent complaint to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) involving Energie Fitness (EF). 

The UK fitness chain, with 55 locations, came under scrutiny after reports emerged that it required members to use facial recognition technology for entry. According to one member's account, they were offered no alternative and risked losing his membership if they failed to provide a face scan. 

In November 2024, the ICO ruled that Energie Fitness had complied with the law by providing an alternative entry method. While this finding contradicts the member's experience, the investigation resulted in EF announcing that it would remove facial recognition technology from all its branches.
