Genetic data platform openSNP to close and delete data
02/04/2025 | Bleeping Computer
Following the news that 23andMe had filed for bankruptcy, the openSNP project, a free and open-source platform for sharing genetic and phenotypic data, will shut down and delete all user data on 30 April 2025 due to growing privacy concerns and the potential for misuse by authoritarian governments. Co-founder Bastian Greshake Tzovaras announced the closure, citing the significantly altered landscape of personal genomics data abuse over the past 14 years.
openSNP, which primarily received data from 23andMe users, allowed individuals to share genetic and phenotype data for research and educational purposes. While the platform became a significant repository, the influx of new data has effectively stopped.
