Meta is preparing to implement artificial intelligence (AI) technology aimed at detecting younger users on Instagram who misrepresent their age. The social media company plans to use a tool it calls the “adult classifier,” which sorts users into two categories: those over 18 and those under. The software will analyse various aspects of a user’s account, including their profile information, follower lists, and interaction patterns with content. The tool will even review birthday posts of friends to help estimate a user’s age. If the software suspects that a user is under 18, the individual will be automatically moved to a teen account, regardless of the age they claim in their profile.
