California children's code nears final passage

In California, the Senate's Committee on Appropriations has voted 5-0 in favour of advancing Assembly Bill 2273, the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act, to the Senate floor. The bill is now eligible for final passage with the Assembly after its second reading was completed following the committee vote. The bill, which is based on the UK Age Appropriate Design Code, includes provisions for children's data protection and limits online exposure for minors under 18. The California Privacy Protection Agency will receive exclusive enforcement powers.

UPDATE: 230822 - The California Senate has amended Assembly Bill 2273, the California Age-Appropriate Design Code, on its third reading. The latest changes have increased the data protection impact assessment submission timeline to three days and extended the period to cure violations to 90 days.
