CMA accepts Meta's advertising commitments

20/08/2024 | CMA

On Tuesday, 20 August 2024, the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced that it had accepted a range of proposals from Meta concerning how it uses customer advertising data. The CMA launched its investigation into whether Meta engaged in anti-competitive advertising practices in June 2021. The news follows a report by Reuters in May that Meta had agreed to restrict the use of certain types of personal data by advertisers on its Facebook Marketplace.

Initially, Meta proposed to limit how it uses advertising customer data to prevent it from getting an unfair advantage. Competitors running advertising campaigns on Meta could also opt out of having their data used to improve Facebook Marketplace.

Under the final commitments accepted by the CMA, advertisers running campaigns on Facebook Marketplace can be assured their advertising data will not be used to improve Facebook Marketplace without the need to opt out.
