French DPA issues warning over use of Google Analytics

09/06/2022 | CNIL

The French data protection authority, the CNIL, has released a Q&A document updating its guidance on the use of Google Analytics following the DPAs decision earlier this year that Google Analytics violates the EU General Data Protection Regulation. The CNIL has also issued an unspecified number of compliance notices over data transfers to companies using Google Analytics. The Q&A explains aspects of the notices, which include a 30-day compliance period as well as an explanation of the CNIL's view on lawful and unlawful uses of Google Analytics. The CNIL confirms that none of the additional guarantees presented as part of the formal notice can prevent US intelligence services from accessing the personal data of European citizens when using Google Analytics. In an earlier announcement dated September 2021, the CNIL issued recommendations for alternative analytics solutions that respect data rights.
