France's data protection authority (DPA), the CNIL, has fined Clearview AI €20m for alleged breaches of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The CNIL began investigating Clearview's facial recognition database and data processing practices back in May 2021. The DPA ordered Clearview to remedy alleged violations in November 2021, which the company ignored. Along with the fine, the CNIL ordered Clearview to cease its processing activities and delete previously collected data associated with GDPR violations. The CNIL is the latest DPA to take action against Clearview.
