Human rights groups warn against UK policing Bill

Human rights groups are concerned about the proposed Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill over claims that it violates individuals' data rights. The Bill provides for the collection and sharing of crime data on alleged criminals involved in "serious violence." According to Griff Ferris at Fair Trials, "There are specific clauses in the Bill which are trying to undermine current data protection laws, which is so insidious." In addition to data rights issues, the advocates believe the Bill could increase discriminatory policing practices and decrease trust in public services over fears of having data used against them.
