The Council of the European Union and the EU Parliament have signed the Digital Markets Act into law. The DMA aims to ensure a "competitive and fair digital sector" while "promoting innovation, high-quality digital products and services, fair prices, and high quality and choice in the digital sector." The law directs online gatekeepers to safeguard platforms in order to facilitate an environment for "innovative digital businesses to grow" and level the playing field between larger and smaller platforms. Companies are considered gatekeepers if they have either an annual turnover of €7.5 billion within the EU in the last three years or have a valuation greater than €75 billion.
