European Council approves Artificial Intelligence Act

On Tuesday, 21 May 2024, the Council of the European Union formally approved the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act). The AI Act will be published in the Official Journal of the EU in the coming weeks and will become effective 20 days after publication.

In a blog article following the news, Leonardo Cervera-Navas, Secretary General at the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), confirmed that the EDPS will be taking on the role of AI supervisor of the EU institutions and has devised an AI plan focusing on three areas: governance, risk management and supervision.
