The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has signed an $18,000 licensing agreement with Clearview AI and subscribed to the company's facial recognition technology. This is despite the fact that Clearview AI has drawn scrutiny for its practices of harvesting millions of photos from social media users across multiple platforms without their knowledge. Beyond Clearview AI's licensing agreement with the FBI, Cyberscoop identified more than 20 federal law enforcement contracts in excess of $7 million for either specified facial recognition technology or contracts with companies whose main product is facial recognition technology. This is in stark contrast with the conclusion of the joint investigation into Clearview AI by the ICO and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, which led to a £17 million monetary penalty from the ICO.
