DPC launches investigation into 5.4m Twitter user data leak

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has opened an investigation into the potential compromise of over 5 million Twitter accounts leaked online reported in November 2022. After considerring the responses to its initial questions, the DPC is of the opinion Twitter may have violated one or more provisions of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

In related news, The GuardianThe Register and BBC News report hackers disclosed records and email addresses from 235 million Twitter accounts on a public forum. A flaw in Twitter's system was reported to be the entry point attackers used to gain access to an unlimited list of email addresses and phone numbers.
