DPC launches investigation over Google's AI model data use

On Thursday, 12 September 2024, the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) announced that it launched an investigation into Google concerning its processing of personal data in the development of its artificial intelligence (AI) foundation model, Pathways Language Model 2 (PaLM 2). The investigation will focus on whether the company complied with its obligations to conduct a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) under Article 35 of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GPDR).
