The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has published its 2022 annual report. Five years after the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force, the DPC significantly increased its enforcement activities across a 12-month period following the conclusion of 17 large-scale inquiries, resulting in over €1 billion in fines, multiple reprimands and compliance orders being imposed. This amount accounted for two-thirds of the total fines across the EU, EEA and UK. In addition, the DPC is cooperating with its fellow EU Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) in 4 other draft decisions in large-scale inquiries under Article 60, with 1 additional draft decision having triggered the EU dispute resolution mechanism Article 65. A further 9 draft decisions in large-scale inquiries are progressing.
In 2022, the DPC processed nearly 9,370 new cases from individuals, of which 2,710 were official complaints. The DPC concluded 10,008 cases, including 1,920 complaints that were received before 2022. The DPC received 5,828 breach notifications.
Data Protection Commissioner Helen Dixon commented, "While the DPC encourages and guides organisations in achieving highest standards of protection in their processing of personal data, the DPC has also demonstrated it does not shy away from enforcing the law and applying sanctions where warranted."
Compare against the DPC's 2021 annual report.
