US FTC to receive $1B budget to protect privacy

The US House Energy and Commerce Committee has passed a proposal to increase funding to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in order to establish a new privacy and data security division. The proposal, part of a proposed $3.5 trillion spending measure, would give the FTC $1 billion over 10 years to create its new unit. The next step for the proposal is a House floor vote. In related news, the FTC announced the approval of eight new compulsory process resolutions to enable higher caseloads. The commission voted 3-2 in favour of the joint recommendation by the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection and Bureau of Competition. Included in the eight categories are children under 18, algorithmic and biometric bias, and deceptive or manipulative conduct on the internet.
