European Data Protection Supervisor, Wojciech Wiewiórowski, delivered the closing remarks at the Computers, Privacy and Data Protection Conference, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to continue a longstanding tradition of the EDPS.
During the speech, Mr Wiewiórowski reflected on his previous remarks about vulnerability and how data protection should give people choices and opportunities rather than being seen as a privilege. However, this year, he noted conference discussions focused on emerging technologies and their impact on privacy and called for strong leadership to safeguard privacy in the digital ecosystem.
Mr Wiewiórowski also touched on the philosophy of data protection and how it is becoming increasingly normal that privacy is being tied to context. On this point, he cautioned "contextual privacy can be a slippery slope" and emphasised the need to prioritise protecting people's rights.
