EDPS opinion on temporary measures to combat child sexual abuse online

The European Data Protection Supervisor has issued anopinion on a proposal from the European Commission to suspend provisions in the ePrivacy Directive in order to help stop the spread of child abuse images online. The EDPS warns against the adoption of the proposal saying it would be a violation of privacy rights and added it "wishes to underline that the issues at stake are not specific to the fight against child abuse but to any initiative aiming at collaboration of the private sector for law enforcement purposes."
