EDPS opinion on the new migration and asylum pact

Following the release of the European Commission's New Pact on Migration and Asylum, the EDPS has issued his opinion. The EDPS accepts that there is a need for more effective management of migration and asylum. However, he stresses how "data protection is one of the last lines of defence for vulnerable individuals, such as migrants and asylum seekers approaching the EU external borders." The EDPS goes on to state how a DPIA should be carried out as part of a broader goal to ensure that individuals fundamental rights are upheld.  In a related post, the Open Rights Group has published an article on Immigration, Data and Technology needs and capacities based on a survey launched earlier this year with Privacy International.
