EDPS welcomes CoE convention on artificial intelligence

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) Wojciech Wiewiórowski has published an opinion welcoming the Council of Europe convention on artificial intelligence (AI) as an opportunity to strengthen privacy and data protection rights and will complement the proposed EU Artificial Intelligence Act. Wiewiórowski urged consistency with the EU's existing data protection framework, which prohibits "AI systems posing unacceptable risks" and includes "minimum procedural safeguards and rights for the persons affected by the use of the AI systems."
