On the fourth anniversary of the EU General Data Protection Regulation, European Data Protection Supervisor Wojciech Wiewiórowski gave the closing speech at the Computers, Privacy and Data Protection conference 2022. Mr Wiewiórowski spoke about how the choices privacy regulations are meant to give people have not been fully realised and that the "task has not been completed yet." We spend a lot of time speaking about enforcement or the impact of data transfers and the use of algorithms. It's easy to forget that fundamentally the goal is protecting the rights of people. While people can be resilient and strong, they can also be vulnerable or denied choices and opportunities.
