EU Commission considers ban on microtargeting for political ads

The European Commission is conducting a public consultation about tightening microtargeting rules for online political advertising. Head of Cabinet of Commission Vice-President Jourova, Renate Nikolay, said that banning microtargeting under certain circumstances is being considered. In its submission to the commission, Google said it does not “support restricting broad targeting capabilities for election ads; however we do believe that verification, in-ad disclosures … and an election ads repository are essential.”
