The European Commission has revealed its plans for an EU Digital Identity Framework as part of the eIDAS Regulation to be used on public and private services across the bloc. The commission's outline said a universal electronic identification system would "provide people with control over their online identity and data as well as to enable access to public, private, and cross-border digital services," adding the system would be "trusted and secure." The scheme will be pitched at the European Council summit with hopes of rolling it out by mid-2021.
