European Commission and CoE pause AI treaty negotiations

The European Commission and the international human rights group Council of Europe have reached a standstill over negotiations for a proposed artificial intelligence treaty. As the Commission is negotiating on behalf of the EU, questions are being asked about how a potential treaty will connect with and affect negotiations on the proposed EU Artificial Intelligence Act. However, a spokesperson for the Commission said the two AI initiatives "add value to each other" and a "constructive and pragmatic approach" to negotiations will be found.
