European Commission backs away from eIDAS single electronic identifier

The European Commission has backed down from its proposed unique electronic identifier framework. Unique, lifelong identifiers for conducting electronic transactions within Europe were one of the more controversial reforms of the eIDAS regulation. Member states have mixed views about the adoption of single identifiers. Some are against such as the Netherlands, Austria, and Germany; however, they are in use in Belgium.
