European Parliament debates EU AI Act

Members of the European Parliament have held their first round of debates on the proposed EU Artificial Intelligence Act. MEPs agreed on two rounds of compromises for regulating AI, covering administrative procedures, conformity assessment, standards, and certificates. On the whole, the meeting focused on the use of biometric recognition surveillance use. The original draft prohibited the use of real-time biometric identification and social scoring. However, MEPs have permitted the technology to identify kidnapping victims and stop "imminent threats."
