Deadlock continues over decision on next EDPS

European lawmakers and member states have failed to agree on who will be appointed the next European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) following inconclusive negotiations on Thursday. The deadlock persists after the mandate of the current EDPS, Wojciech Wiewiórowski, expired in early December.

The European Parliament's LIBE committee supports Bruno Gencarelli, an Italian Commission official, while member states prefer Wiewiórowski to continue in his role. A special working group, comprising representatives from both institutions, has been established and convened twice in March, with no further meetings yet scheduled. The Council is set to determine the next course of action in the coming week.
