EBF fraud prevention report calls for harmonised approach with GDPR

On Tuesday, 17 September 2024, the European Banking Federation (EBF) published a report addressing fraud in retail payments. The report highlights the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the necessity for a harmonised approach to fraud prevention, particularly in data exchange for identifying criminals responsible for fraud. Elsewhere, the report recommends a cross-sectoral approach by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) and stresses the need to resolve conflicting objectives with other data protection authorities (DPAs). The report also details the importance of data-sharing platforms complying with the GDPR, citing the Global Anti-Scam Alliance as an example of a centralised data-sharing platform for fraud prevention.
