EU Commission closes DSA investigation into TikTok Lite

On Monday, 5 August  2024, The European Commission announced that it has accepted commitments submitted by TikTok to permanently withdraw its watch-and-get-rewarded application, TikTok Lite, from the EU and agreed not to launch a similar programme in the future. In light of the development, the Commission has closed its investigation into the proposed service launched under the Digital Services Act (DSA) in April. 

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, TechCrunch reports that the US Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department are suing TikTok for violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) for allowing "millions of children under 13 on their platform," for years.
