On Friday, 12 July 2024, the European Commission informed the social platform X of its preliminary findings following an in-depth investigation into alleged violations of Articles 25, 39 and 40(12) of the Digital Services Act (DSA).
The Commission has informed the company of three areas of non-compliance. These include:
- Not following industry practice with its updated verified account (blue-checkmark) process that deceives users into believing the authenticity of the accounts and the content they interact with.
- Not complying with transparency requirements for online advertising.
- Not providing researchers with access to its public data.
X has the opportunity to examine any documents from the Commission's investigation file and to respond to the claims in writing before a final ruling is issued.
In related news, The Guardian reports on the ensuing spat that took place on X after Elon Musk issued a response and a "battle in court".
