On Friday, 16 August, the European Commission announced that it had sent Meta a request for information (RFI) under the Digital Services Act (DSA) following the discontinuation of its public insights tool CrowdTangle on 14 August 2024. The Commission is requesting information clarifying:
- Measures required under the DSA to allow researchers access to data that is publicly accessible on Facebook and Instagram;
- How Meta plans to update its election and civic discourse monitoring functionalities;
- Meta's content library and application programming interface (API), including any eligibility criteria, application process, along with the data that can be accessed and functionalities.
The Commission has given Meta until 6 September 2024 to provide the requested information.
