The European Union and Japan will begin negotiations on 24 October to include cross-border data transfer rules in their Economic Partnership Agreement. In a press release, the European Commission said that businesses on both sides would benefit, adding, “Our aim is to ensure cross-border data flows by prohibiting unjustified data localisation requirements, while preserving the EU’s regulatory autonomy in the area of personal and non-personal data protection and cybersecurity.”
