EU proposes new US alliance to counter China threat

Update 02/12/20 - The European Commission has now published its proposal for a new EU-US agenda, which includes considerations for data transfers and artificial intelligence. The commission suggests that the EU and US must "intensify their cooperation" to "promote regulatory convergence and facilitate free data flow with trust." With AI, the commission proposes work on a Transatlantic AI Agreement that will "set a blueprint for regional and global standards aligned with our values." As reported last week in the FT, an EU-US Summit to discuss these matters was confirmed for 2021.  Across the Atlantic, the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation announced a hearing to discuss the invalidation of the EU-US Privacy Shield and matters relating to trans-Atlantic data flows on the 9th December.  

29/11/20 - Reuters reports that the European Commission has outlined a draft plan for renewed cooperation between the EU and US on a mixture of issues, which includes data protection. The proposal proposes creating a shared approach to enforcing data protection law and fighting cybersecurity threats, according to an article first published in the Financial Times (subscription required). The plan will be submitted for endorsement at the beginning of December with the intention being to launch the new trans-Atlantic agenda at a potential EU-US summit in 2021.
