EU planning to issue lower fines under DMA to Apple and Meta

28/03/2025 | Financial Times

The EU is preparing to issue relatively small fines to Apple and Meta under the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA) to avoid escalating tensions with the US and concerns about how the US President would react.

Meta will face a fine and be ordered to change its Consent or Pay model, while Apple will likely be fined and required to modify its App Store rules.

Despite having the power to issue fines of up to 10% of global turnover under the DMA, the report reveals that the European Commission intends to impose significantly lower fines. This approach is attributed to the relative novelty of the DMA and the potential for legal challenges. Furthermore, the Commission's current focus is on ensuring compliance rather than imposing massive financial penalties.
