UK Artificial Intelligence Bill to focus on ChatGPT-style models

01/08/2024 | Financial Times

In a recent meeting with major technology companies, the UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, Peter Kyle, assured executives that the upcoming artificial intelligence (AI) Bill will be narrowly focused on regulating the most advanced AI models. The Bill is expected to make existing voluntary agreements between companies and the government legally binding and establish the UK's new AI Safety Institute as an arms-length government body.

Kyle addressed concerns from industry leaders that additional regulations might be added during the legislative process, emphasising that the Bill will not become a "Christmas tree Bill." The UK government aims to support the tech and AI sectors to boost UK growth. Although an official announcement of the AI bill was not included in the King's Speech, the Labour government is optimistic that the Bill will be ready for its first reading by the end of the year.
