IAB Europe has sent a letter to the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) to highlight important considerations concerning the board's intention to develop additional guidelines around tiered (Consent or Pay) subscription models. IAB Europ has requested a public consultation on the matter and recommended that the EDPB's position should be based on existing case law and guidelines across the European Union and European Economic Area.
In a related post, the Austrian privacy campaign group NOYB has highlighted the financial impact payment models are already having in several member states. NOYB suggests that in less than 12 months after Germany permitted the practice, 30% of the country's top 100 websites use it to increase advertising consent rates. The alternative "pay" fee for website access without ads is more than €1,500 per year. In Spain, the figure is €1,460 while in France the cost is €1,100.
