Are cookies an acceptable currency for the online world?

A statement from the Italian data protection authority (DPA), the Garante, on cookie paywalls has opened a new chapter in the ongoing story of profiling cookies. The DPA asserts that in certain situations, cookie paywalls are not forbidden, opening: "new scenarios on a core issue in the current data protection landscape: the monetisation of personal data." However, uncertainty remains around what criteria would make cookie paywalls fully compliant with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or what would be the effect of the long-awaited ePrivacy Regulation. An official position from the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) would help.
