Behind the EDPB's efforts to improve GDPR enforcement cooperation

On the eve of the EU General Data Protection regulation's 4th birthday, the IAPP take a deep dive into the European Data Protection Board's efforts to enhance GDPR enforcement through better cooperation. Despite fines totalling more than a billion euros, criticism of GDPR enforcement is only increasing. Concerns include member states being slow to reign in technology companies located in their countries, the one-stop-mechanism not working, a lack of resources, and the difficulty of balancing varying national laws and priorities across EU member states. However, if last month's meeting in Vienna means anything, it's that efforts are underfoot to bring about a new phase of closer cooperation on strategic cases in which DPAs "will collectively identify cross border cases of strategic importance in different Member States on a regular basis, for which cooperation will be prioritised and supported by EDPB."
