Data mapping is generally considered the foundation of an effective privacy programme — but what exactly is it? In an article for the IAPP, BigID Chief Privacy Officer Heather Federman (CIPP/US) explains why it's more than just a compliance exercise. Federman said that data mapping demonstrates "the more you know your data, the better you can protect and leverage it for greater business insights." The article examines several suggested steps for data governance and privacy professionals. "On the other side of the tunnel is real visibility into the who-what-why of data with the proper foundation and guardrails to effectively utilise it across the organisation," she said.
