IAPP-EY have published their Annual Privacy Governance Report 2023. According to the report, privacy governance has become more critical to the success of an organisation than ever before. While the practice of data privacy began in a legal capacity during the 1970s and 1980s, technological advancements have made it necessary to adopt a cross-disciplinary approach that includes training, tools, and broader integration across multiple areas of digital and data governance.
The latest report builds on previous efforts to highlight the importance of privacy governance within organisations. The report explores the role of data protection officers and trending issues in privacy strategy, resourcing, and budget. It also focuses on the emergence of privacy-enhancing technologies and artificial intelligence governance, which are expected to grow in importance and use. The report emphasises the need for a more professional and standardised approach to the privacy engineering community to support the implementation of these technologies.
Among the key findings, 33% of organisations have seen their privacy teams expand in the past year. This reflects how the role of privacy professionals and teams has integrated into all facets of organisational operations and strategic planning. The survey revealed that 86% of respondents regularly work with three or more teams within their organisation and that the most senior privacy leader is within the top five highest levels of 78% of organisations surveyed. However, budgetary constraints are a threat, with 63% of respondents reporting limited resources are impacting their ability to deliver on privacy goals and only 20% saying that they were confident in their organisation's privacy law compliance.
