Comprehensive data protection laws exist around the world. While each law is different, there are many common threads as far as rights, obligations and enforcement provisions. The IAPP Westin Research Center has developed a chart that maps many of these laws to assist members in understanding how different countries and territories around the world approach data protection. The chart will be updated as laws are amended, and other laws come into force. Meanwhile, as Middle Eastern countries ramp up regulatory oversight over data protection, companies operating in the region seek guidance on evaluating risk, implementing data privacy frameworks, and upholding compliance. In this article, the IAPP provides a snapshot of emerging laws in the Middle East, paying particular attention to penalties, data privacy risks, best practices, and compliance.
