US Congress is taking steps to establish rules for the deployment and use of artificial intelligence (AI). Senator Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y has proposed a comprehensive two-part plan called the Securities, Accountability, Foundations, Explain and Innovation Framework (SAFE Innovation Framework), which is one part framework and one part process.
The SAFE Innovation Framework aims to ensure AI is developed and deployed in a responsible and transparent manner. To fulfill the framework, Schumer will roll out "a series of AI insight forums" later this year that will guide curation of rules. Schumer believes that Congress must join the AI revolution, and his initiative aims to be good enough that the world will follow.
Schumer said that the framework is lightly informed by other countries, including the proposed EU Artificial Intelligence Act.
