IBM has published a detailed guide on implementing a holistic approach to data protection to gain a competitive advantage. The guide is part of a wider series of resources on data leadership, which include strategies for scaling up responsible artificial intelligence (AI), building a data-driven organisation, modern data architecture, and the foundations of a data literate culture. 

In outlining its case for a holistic data protection programme, IBM explores three pillars of data protection: 

According to IBM, these pillars  "function together under the umbrella of data protection to support a flexible framework built for ever-changing regulations and business expectations, scaling AI responsibly and upholding user confidence."
