Former RAC staff given suspended sentences for stealing personal data

09/10/2024 | ICO

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has confirmed that two former RAC employees, Debbie Okparavero and Maliha Islam, have been given a suspended prison sentence and mandated to complete 150 hours of unpaid work for unlawfully copying and selling over 29,500 lines of personal information. The RAC discovered the personal data breach after a new security monitoring software was installed. The software revealed that Okparavero had unlawfully accessed and copied personal information concerning individuals involved in road traffic accidents. It was later revealed that Okparavero shared the information with Islam in a WhatsApp chat.

Both defendants pleaded guilty to offences under the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and Data Protection Act 2018. The pair were sentenced to 6-month prison terms, suspended for 18 months, at a hearing at Minshull Street Crown Court on 8 October 2024.
