ICO and Ofcom issue joint statement on online safety and data protection

In a joint statement released on Friday, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), together with communications regulator Ofcom, have set out how they intend to work together to ensure consistency in the regulation of data protection and online safety. The two industry regulators have already established a cooperative relationship through their participation in the Digital Regulation Cooperation Forum. The statement outlines their shared aims that people should be able to use digital services with "confidence that their safety and privacy will be upheld" and that providers "of all sizes to comply with their obligations and to continue to innovate and grow, supported by regulatory clarity and free from undue burden."

Ofcom is anticipated to be granted new powers under the Online Safety Bill when it returns to Parliament next month.
