ICO announces intent to fine Clearview AI £17m

30/11/2021 | ICO

The ICO has announced its intention to issue Clearview AI a £17 million monetary penalty over the company's alleged misuse of scraped images and data, along with its use of facial recognition technology. The news comes following the conclusion of a joint investigation with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. The ICO found several violations of UK data protection laws in relation to Clearview's data processing, transparency and consent practices. "I have significant concerns that personal data was processed in a way that nobody in the UK will have expected," Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said.

The news has been widely praised by activists and groups championing data rights, such as Privacy International and EDRi, while mainstream media outlets on both sides of the Atlantic, including The Guardian and The New York Times, reported the news.
