The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has called for organisations to share personal information responsibly in order to safeguard customers against fraud and scams. Fraud currently represents the most common crime in the UK, accounting for 39% of all reported crimes in England and Wales. The ICO highlighted that reluctance to exchange personal information can have significant emotional and financial consequences for individuals. The statement clarified that the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018 do allow for the appropriate sharing of personal data to prevent harm.
To mark International Fraud Awareness Week, the ICO has published new practical advice clarifying data protection considerations to empower banks, telecommunications providers and digital platforms to share data effectively and responsibly in the fight against fraud.
